The International Theatre Festival KONTAKT has been organized by Wilam Horzyca Theatre since 1991. KONTAKT made it possible to see and promote the most interesting theatre events of Central and Eastern Europe countries, as well as to confront them with Western Europe theatre.
KONTAKT has become the intermediary of multinational, sometimes quite difficult-to-reach understanding in a new reality. The festival’s importance comes primarily from the artistic value of the performances staged during the festival. The repertoire of the festival is a result of a very meticulous verification and selection process undertaken by the selection committee.
Theatres from countries neighbouring Poland are the ones primarily invited to participate in KONTAKT, however, this rule has been weakening year after year. So far, theatres from the following countries have participated in KONTAKT: Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, the Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, USA, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yugoslavia. The KONTAKT festival is a biannual event that takes places during the last week of May.
KONTAKT hosts an international group of over 100 observers (theatre practitioners, critics, theatre school students, directors of European theatre festivals – London’s LIFT, Vienna’s Wiener Festwochen, German Theater der Welt, Belgian Kunsten Festival des Arts, the festival in Edinburgh), as well as radio and television journalists. TV crews from Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Belarus and Lithuania are present at the festival.
As a part of the KONTAKT festival, associated events take place as well – art exhibitions, film screenings, music concerts. Performances are accompanied by meetings with creative teams – a very important element of the festival.
The KONTAKT festival is, at its core, a contest. The performances staged during the festival are evaluated by an international jury, which awards three main festival prizes. There is also a possibility of prizes being funded by private individuals, institutions and companies.
We invite you to take a look at the programme of this year’s edition of the festival.
