Without a Dowry
At the core of the story is a ‘Russian Carmen’. Except here, rather than courted by a romantic toreador and a soldier, she is ensnared by a strictly hierarchical and mostly cruel band of ‘businessmen’ with strange invented names. This allows us to see them as characters in a Russian commedia dell’arte, and to see Ostrovsky himself as the forefather of this genre in Russian drama. Krymov is one of the revolutionaries of contemporary Russian theatre and has introduced into it a unique aesthetic. His performances show an idiosyncratic mixture of genres, styles and directions leaving no one indifferent. It is no coincidence that they have been labelled the ‘Theatre of Artists’.
Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes (with 1 interval)
